family of youth

"Family of Youth" is a project promoted by the "Luxembourg Youth Hostels" and the "Youthcentre Vianden/Puetscheid" in collaboration with ASTI, which will take place in Luxembourg, during the summer 2007.

It is an intercultural exchange for young people from different countries all over Europe.

The exhibition 'the family of man' has celebrated its 50 anniversary in 2005. The collection of photographs which is unique in its genre, has since its creation in 1955 spread a strong message that is peace and solidarity between people. Edward Steichen, the curator of the exhibition has always encouraged people to speak against war. The debate against war is still a present-day subject and disastrous images of killing and homicide accompany us in our everyday life. The idea is to unite people for worldwide peace.

Intercultural exchange

Our project is an exchange between young people from different countries and cultures. Relations between people all over Europe are created and cultural barriers widened.

We invite everyone participating to bring with them images and impressions of their own country and to share them in the group. Additional to that every participant is invited to think in advance about Luxembourg, so that opinions about the welcoming country can be discussed together.

Beside this, the project has two main goals:
1. to initiate an "Edward Steichen"-trail combining all Ed. Steichen exhibitions in Luxembourg
2. The creation of an exhibition showing the image of Luxembourg in the eyes of a tourist coming for the first time to Luxembourg

Who can participate on the exchange?

The project is financed by the "Youth in Action" programme of the 'European Commission' and Luxembourg 2007, city of culture 2007. Following countries will have a priority: Luxemburg, Spain, Cyprus, Turkey, Morocco, Greece, Israel, West Bank and Gaza strip, Moldova and the Ukraine. From every country, 4 adolescents from 13 to 25 years have the chance to participate. The group has to be accompanied by 1 companion.

Program

Participants will arrive on 19th July. The young people will initiate an 'Edward Steichen trail', which leads them in 2 groups from Dudelange, home of the CNA and the exhibition of Ed. Steichen 'the bitter years', over the city of Luxembourg, to Clervaux, the home city of the "family of man". This cultural tour, which passes by the city of Luxemburg, European capital of culture in 2007, is done by foot and on bicycle, so the participants will have an impression of our small country. Every participant takes his own pictures (cameras can be made available) of what impresses him and at the end of the route their personal collection will be discussed and presented in an exhibition in Vianden.

On the way, they visit different collections of Edward Steichen and take part on a diversity of cultural events in the context of the European capital of culture 2007. The tour will end with some workshops treating different themes of the family of man and workshops in order to prepare the exhibition. During the tour, the participants are helped and teached by professional photographers. On the end an exhibition and the trail will be the traces of a rich cultural exchange.
