About Steichen
The spirit of the Edward J. Steichen exhibit
"The Family of Man" is an exhibit of photographs created in 1955 by Edward J. Steichen for the Museum of Modern Art of New York. The photographs show facets of human life, focusing on analogies between the experiences and the emotions that all human beings have in their daily lives. E. Steichen, in picturing people from different ethnic groups, reminds us of their common membership in the family of "humanity."
The collection consists of about 500 images made by 273 authors from 68 countries. The 37 themes reflect human joy and
sadness, satisfaction and hardship, peaceful aspirations as well as deadly conflicts. The images strongly emphasize the role
of democratic structures and promote the role of the United Nations.
The "Family of Man" exhibit has been
installed permanently in the castle at Clervaux in Luxembourg. In 2003 the collection was included in the UNESCO Memory of
the World Register.
